Speed Feedback Signs
In the spring of 2019, the Amherst Police Department purchased two portable speed feedback signs in order to replace the aging, single radar trailer which the Department purchased in 2003. Portable speed feedback sign technology allows for a single officer to transport and mount two signs in different locations in a matter of minutes and without the need for a towing vehicle. Also, portable signs can be used in locations where the bulky radar trailer would previously not fit. Radar speed signs provide an effective and reliable traffic calming solution for reducing speeding drivers. Tests repeatedly show that:
- Speeders will slow down up to 80% of the time when alerted by a radar speed sign
- Typical speed reductions are 10-20%
- Overall compliance with the posted speed limit will go up by 30-60%
- Radar speed signs are particularly effective at getting “super speeders”—speeders driving 20 mph or more over the posted speed limit—to slow down
These signs will be rotated through various locations during the course of the year, and will enhance the Department's speed enforcement efforts which are aimed at improving driver behavior and providing safer roadways.
