Deputy Town Clerk, Fulltime

Position Summary: The Town of Amherst is seeking a professional, organized, and detail-oriented person to provide essential administrative and clerical support to the Town Clerk’s Office. This fulltime position plays a critical role in supporting the Town Clerk. The ideal candidate is dependable, discreet, customer-service oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced public environment requiring strict confidentiality. Key Responsibilities:

  • Processing licensing, including motor vehicles, boats, titles, marriages and dogs and collection of fees.
  • Processing and maintaining vital records for birth, death, marriage and divorce records.
  • Assists with election duties, including voter registration, election materials, absentee ballot requests, and election day operations.
  • Various reporting and recordkeeping duties of physical and electronic records and reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be a resident of the Town of Amherst
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of the Federal and State laws, regulations and procedures necessary to conduct Town Clerk Office responsibilities.
  • Must have proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, and ability to learn and adapt to new technology.
  • Knowledge of financial record-keeping, cash-handling, records management and standard office practices and procedures.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills with the ability to prioritize work, manage multiple assignments, and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
  • HS Diploma or GED required; Associates Degree in Business or Office Administration, etc., preferred.
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative, clerical, financial, municipal, or customer service experience; municipal clerk experience preferred.

Town Treasurer, Appointed (Finance Department)

A Treasurer for a New Hampshire municipality serves as the custodian of the town's funds, ensuring that public money is safeguarded, accurately accounted for, and disbursed only as authorized.

The role typically includes making bank deposits several times (typically 2-3) per week, reviewing and signing accounts payable and payroll manifests, reviewing bank reconciliations, and approving electronic banking transactions to maintain strong internal controls. The Treasurer also works with the Finance Director to manage cash flow and invest excess funds in accordance with New Hampshire law and the town's investment policy. Residency in the Town of Amherst is not required.

Captain of EMS (Regular Part-Time)
The Town of Amherst, New Hampshire, seeks an experienced, mission-driven EMS professional to serve as Captain of EMS for the Amherst Fire and EMS Department. This is a non-exempt, regular part-time position averaging 24 hours per week (typically two 12-hour shifts/week), no more than 1,560 hours per calendar year.
This frontline officer position provides supervisory leadership, clinical oversight, and operational support to the EMS division — ensuring high-quality patient care, maintaining personnel and equipment readiness, and supporting the day-to-day operations that keep the department mission-capable. The Captain serves as a key member of the department’s officer corps and reports directly to the Deputy Chief – Operations, with secondary reporting to the Fire and EMS Chief in the Deputy Chief’s absence. This is an opportunity to help shape EMS performance, training, and clinical practice within a well-supported, professional organization committed to measurable outcomes, community partnership, and employee wellness.
The Amherst Fire and EMS Department blends a proud tradition of service with a commitment to innovation and modernization. The department responds to approximately 1,750 emergency calls annually and conducts 400–500 fire and life-safety inspections each year, and is made up of approximately 80 members, including on-call firefighters, per-diem EMS providers, an Administrative Assistant, and three full-time senior officers. The EMS division is staffed 24/7 by per-diem providers who deliver both basic and advanced life support and, under a contract, also provide EMS coverage to the Town of Mont Vernon. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise EMS crews during daily operations and emergency responses; serve as on-duty supervisor and support incident management.
  • Provide clinical guidance to EMTs and paramedics; ensure compliance with NH EMS protocols, documentation standards, and QA/QI expectations.
  • Oversee staffing-model coverage, monthly and as-needed scheduling, crew assignments, and conflict resolution.
  • Oversee daily inspections of vehicles, equipment, and supplies; coordinate maintenance and inventory control.
  • Coordinate EMS training, skill assessments, and mentorship of new or developing providers and officers.
  • Conduct evaluations, provide coaching and corrective action, and relay operational or clinical issues to command staff.
  • Model professional behavior, teamwork, and customer service.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED. Bachelor’s degree in Emergency Medical Services, Fire Science, Administration, or related field preferred.
  • NREMT Paramedic certification.
  • NH EMS Provider License.
  • Ten (10) years as an EMS provider.
  • Instructor I (or willingness to obtain within 12 months of hire).
  • Valid driver’s license in state of residence (CDL-B preferred); ability to operate emergency vehicles.
  • Must be able to pass Department pre-employment physical.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience.
  • NH Instructor/Coordinator.
  • Firefighter II.
COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE
Hourly Wage Range:  $29.10 - $35.79, depending on certifications
Annual Stipend:  $4,000
Classification:  Regular Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours:  Average 24 hrs/week; no more than 1,560 hrs/year
Leave:  Pro-rated paid vacation and sick leave per Town policy

The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, technical competence, and the ability to guide both on-call and career personnel through continued organizational development and cultural advancement. Preferred residency within 20 miles or 30 minutes of Amherst within six (6) months of appointment.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Administration, Community Risk Reduction, Emergency Management, or a related field
  • Ten (10) years of fire service experience, including at least three (3) years in a leadership, supervisory, or prevention-focused role
    Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Required Licenses & Certifications
  • NH or Pro-Board Firefighter II
  • Nationally Registered EMT (Advanced EMT or Paramedic preferred)
  • Fire Inspector I (Fire Inspector II preferred or obtained within 18 months)
  • Fire Officer I (Fire Officer II preferred or obtained within 2 years)
  • ICS 100/200 (ICS 300/400 preferred or obtained within 18 months)
  • Valid driver’s license: NH CDL-B (or obtained within 1 year)
  • Valid CPAT or be eligible for lateral transfer within the NH Retirement System
  • Must complete an NFPA 1580 medical exam
  • Preferred / Post-Hire Certifications
  •  Fire Investigator certification (within 1-2 years)
  • ICC Fire Plans Examiner certification (within 2–3 years)

The Town of Amherst Public Works Department is seeking a dependable and motivated individual to join our team as a Full-Time Transfer Station Attendant.
This position supports the daily operations of the Amherst Transfer Station, including assisting residents with recycling and waste disposal, operating light equipment, maintaining facility cleanliness, monitoring permits and sorting areas, and supporting winter operations and other DPW duties as assigned.
 
Position Details

  • Starting Pay: $23.43/hour

On-Call Solid Waste Attendant

Amherst NH Department of Public Works is hiring a Transfer Station attendant to fill a vacancy at the Amherst Transfer Station. This position is “On-Call” to cover during times of staffing deficiencies, there is no penalty for refusal of hours and no minimum hours.  We are looking for someone who likes to interact with residents and is willing to educate them about recycling and solid waste.
