The Amherst Police Department recently took delivery of a new tool in our efforts to improve traffic safety in Town. The Kustom Signals S.M.A.R.T. (Speed Monitoring Awareness Trailer) is a portable, self-contained speed display unit that is towed to locations throughout Town and set-up on the roadside. Drivers approaching the unit will see the posted speed limit as well as a highly visible display of their own speed. Since it is a generally accepted fact that the majority of speeding motorists do not do so deliberately, S.M.A.R.T. will be deployed to help educate motorists as to the speed they are traveling, and increase voluntary compliance. Though S.M.A.R.T. will not replace visible patrols and traffic enforcement, it is a proactive approach in addressing what is becoming an increasing problem of excessive speed, particularly in residential areas.
S.M.A.R.T. was purchased with a combination of local tax dollars, a federal highway safety grant, and private donations. The Department would like to publicly thank the following businesses/groups for their support in making this worthy project happen:
Wal Mart Stores, Fulcrum Associates, H & M Metals, Amherst Junior Womens Club, Amherst Animal Hospital, Currier Lumber, Resin Systems, C.U.E.S. Incorporated, Acorn Federal Credit Union, and Ceratec Tile.
The Department invites any citizen who would like to have S.M.A.R.T. make an appearance near their home or business to submit a request via email, or call the station at 603-673-4900.
