Hazard Mitigation Plan Committee

The town is in the process of updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan and seeking feedback from the community before it is finalized. In order to provide a platform for easy collaboration with the public, a Google Doc link of the draft Amherst Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan 2023 is available at https://bit.ly/AmherstPlan. Input will be collected until Tuesday, February 28. To ask questions, provide feedback and submit comments, feel free to provide suggested edits in the Google Doc or email Fire Chief & Emergency Management Director Matt Conley at [email protected] or (603) 673-1545. A downloadable PDF of the draft plan is also available here.

Hazard mitigation planning reduces loss of life and property by minimizing the impact of disasters. It begins with state, tribal and local governments identifying natural disaster risks and vulnerabilities that are common in their area. After identifying these risks, they develop long-term strategies for protecting people and property from similar events. Mitigation plans are key to breaking the cycle of disaster damage and reconstruction.

Municipalities must update their Hazard Mitigation Plans every five years in order to maintain eligibility for federal mitigation grants. The Town of Amherst is currently updating their hazard mitigation plan which was last updated in 2015.

If you have any questions or would like to contribute ideas to the planning process, please reach out to Chief Matt Conley, Amherst Fire Rescue/ Emergency Management Director via email or by phone at (603) 673-1545 ext 301.
