Voter Registration

Amherst citizens may register to vote during regular business hours at the Town Clerk's Office. In many cases out of state registrations, such as those done at concerts or rallies are not legally acceptable in New Hampshire. Call the town clerk for more information if you are unsure of you registration.

In order to register to vote in Amherst, you will need to provide the following to the town clerk:

  • A picture ID to identify yourself, such as a passport or a driver's license. Naturalized citizens must provide court naturalization papers.
  • A proof of residency: A phone or electric bill that includes your name and Amherst address, or for children returning to live with parents, a letter from the parents is accepted.

The Supervisors of the Checklist hold registration sessions prior to an election and their hours are posted in the local paper and the Town Hall. Voter registration cannot be accepted within ten (10) days prior to an election to provide the time needed to create the voter lists for the election. However, you can register and vote at the election site on each election day.

Elections

Town elections are held the second Tuesday in March. State and Federal elections are held as required by law. Information on voting locations and times can be found on the town elections page. Election results will be available at this web site as soon as possible after voting is completed.

Absentee Ballots

Absentee ballots are available for each election for voters who are disabled or will be absent from town on election day. These ballots are available at the Town Clerk's Office. The voter must be registered and submit a request in writing with a signature on it requesting a ballot along with the address where it is to be mailed. Absentee ballots can be requested at the Town Clerk's office up to the day before the election. If requested by mail, be sure to provide enough time to receive the ballot and return it before election day.

The ballot must be received, if in hand, by 5:00 p.m. the day before the election and, if mailed, by 5:00 p.m. on election day. No absentee ballots may be accepted in hand on election day. Information on absentee ballots for specific elections can be found on the town elections page.
