Meet the Transfer Station Attendents
These are the people who work to make out transfer station easy to use and a joy to visit.
(If the lines aren't to long.)
Bill Cole
Bill Works part time – usually on Saturdays plus on those occasions after holidays when the transfer station is expected to be very busy.
Bill has been at the transfer station since July of 1999. Prior to coming to the transfer station he worked in retail distribution managing the
New England territory. Bill will be working up the hill helping in the recycling area now that recycling has increase in the last 6 months.
Dick Smith
Dick has been with the Amherst Transfer Station for almost 7 years, prior to that he was with the Hollis Transfer Station from which he retired
after over 20 years of service. Dick usually runs the trash packers, and is very conscientious helping residents dispose of their trash.
Dick has 9 children; 27 grandkids; and 13 great grandchildren! WOW! Dick just recently turned 69!
Don Smith
At 71 years old, Don is Dick Smith’s “older and wiser” brother. Don is a retired Army vet and served in Korea and Vietnam.
Don has been at the Amherst Transfer Station 5 years. Don has 6 children, 4 grandchildren, and the first great grandchild born in
December 2006. Don is often at the trash compactors, and occasionally relieves Carl in the recycling area.
Richard Pratt
Richard has been with the Amherst Transfer Station for 7 years. Richard has years of experience working with New Hampshire town
highway departments, landfills and transfer stations. Richard worked for 15 years in Milford and 7 years in Hollis. Richard also spent
time with the New Hampshire State Highway Department. Early on Richard moved to North Carolina for 5 years where he a foreman with
a private construction company. Apparently he missed the wonderful “Spring” weather of New Hampshire. Typically you will find Richard
at the Scale House where he deals with weighty matters. Richard has 7 children; 21 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren!
Richard holds a Public Weighmaster License.
Carl Wetherbee
Carl is in his 5th year with the Amherst Transfer Station since; his expertise lies is recycling having served on the Governor’s Solid Waste
Task Force in 2001; and he was involved with the Souhegan Valley Environmental Group which was the group that began recycling in
Milford many years ago.
Prior to Amherst Carl was with the Wilton Recycling Center. Carl was selected to go to Brazil to give a presentation on how the Wilton
Recycling Center operated. The trip was sponsored by Catholic University.
Carl managed the Peterborough Center and was a key member of the committee which instituted “Pay-As-You-Throw” in the town.
Articles about Carl were published in the local Peterborough newspaper due to his unique approach to running the center.
You will find Carl “up the hill” in the recycling area on most days stacking cardboard, watching over the many types of recycling containers
and helping residents with recycling their items. Carl is extremely knowledgeable about the ins and outs of recycling.
He has been a great resource for Amherst.
Carl holds a Public Weighmaster License and is a Level IV Solid Waste Facility Advanced Operator.
Edna Worchester
Edna Worchester has been with the Amherst Transfer Station almost 10 years. She has her Public Weighmaster License and is a Level III
Solid Waste Facility Advanced Operator. Until recently Edna has been “on call” to substitute or work on very heavy recycling days.
In January Edna started a regular role on Saturdays due to the increase in recycling. Edna can usually be found at the trash compactors
now that Bill Cole has moved up the hill to work in the recycling area.
