Tree Lighting Festival
Sunday, December 9, 2007
 |
Santa's Helpers, from the Amherst Fire Department,
work to get the Amherst Tree Ready in November |
The Amherst Tree Lighting Festival is always held on the second Sunday in
December. It falls on December 9th this year.
It is an afternoon when our town organizations, churches and clubs work hard to enliven our beautiful village with several concerts,
hayrides, bazaars, visits with Santa, live Nativities, fire engine rides, children's events, and even a spaghetti supper.
The day is planned around the 5 PM Tree Lighting Ceremony during which all the winter holidays are acknowledged. Songs and
readings about Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, The Winter Solstice, and the First Snow are sung and read.
Before the lighting ceremony, a full day of activities take place on and around the green.
The lighting ceremony on the green is followed by the traditional spaghetti supper at Wilkins School with proceeds going to SHARE,
and the Winter concert at Souhegan High School.
Traditionally, at dusk, single, white candle lights appear in the windows of each village home. The crowd gathers and "oohs and ahhs"
as the colorful village tree is lit.
Come get in the holiday spirit! Join us on the 9th! To help, or for more information, contact
Ann Bergin.
