Hemlock Pest Program

Interested in learning more about the triple threat to the Northern New England Hemlock?  Join us at Peabody Mill Environmental Center on Saturday April 9th for a workshop on the impacts of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA), Elongate Hemlock Scale (EHS), and Sirococcus tsugae.  Presenting will be Kyle Lombard, Forest Entomologist and Pathologist with the NH Division of Forests & Lands.  In addition, there will be presentations by Jonathan Nute, Hillsborough County Cooperative Extension Forester, local forester Charlie Koch, and ACC commissioner and certified Master Arborist Lee Gilman to share their boots on the ground experience with these invasives.  Hear how this crisis impacts the ACC Forest Management Plan for town owned parcels, and join us on a field trip to the nearby Hemlock Trail to see the impacts first hand.  Learn why "Hemlock Trail" may join Chestnut Hill as names of a bygone era!

11:00-11:30 AM   Jonathan Nute – County-wide assessment

11:30 -12:00 PM  Charlie Koch, ACC Consulting Forester, will lead  a walk along the Hemlock Trail at adjacent Joe English Forest to view the decline and death of the mature hemlocks. Assisted by Lee Gilman, ACC and arborist.

12:00-1:00 PM  BYOL brown bag lunch and open discussion

1:00-2:00 PM    Optional field trip to the Haseltine Preserve to observe additional impacted areas and an active salvage operation.

Please carpool, parking is limited.  If you plan to join the field trips, please bring appropriate attire, including traction devices.  These trails are steep and slick.
