Managing Household Wastes

One key to conservation in your backyard is management of the wastes that you produce. Here are some things to do.

  • Compost Kitchen and Yard Wastes: Compost is a mixture of decomposed organic residues - coffee grounds, potato peelings, weeds and leaves, for example. It can greatly improve soil structure and fertility. It is the easiest and cheapest source of organic matter and fertilizer that you can add to the soil for your lawn and garden. As an added bonus, it also keep a lot of things out of the local landfill.

Here are a couple of web sites with all the details about home composting and mulching.

  • Dispose of Hazardous Wastes Safely: Hazardous Wastes are collected regularly in Nashua. Take hazardous wastes that you don't want in your backyard or home to the Nashua Regional Hazardous Waste Collection Site at the Nashua Public Works Garage. Check the Nashua Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program web site for details and the schedules.

  • Pollution Prevention for Households: Here is information provided by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services that provides many useful techniques to reduce pollution in the home.
