Conservation Lands
Great Meadow
The Great Meadow contains 50 acres and is located near the
center of town between Boston Post Rd. across from Wilkins School and Jacobsen's
Farm on Christian Hill Road. There is access over land purchased from the
Manchester Catholic Diocese to a short boardwalk into the wetland. The Meadow is
now and has long been covered with alder and other brush, but up to the middle
of the 20th century, it was regularly hayed by town residents.
Beacuse the ground is so wet, haying needed to be done with horses.
Heavy tractors could not be used on the soft ground. With Beaver
Brook and Caesar's Brook flowing through it, it is a natural reservoir for the village water
supply.
