Press Release from the Amherst Board of Selectmen

AMHERST FIRE CHIEF ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT

March 3, 2010

The Amherst Board of Selectmen announces that Amherst Fire Chief Richard Todd, after a distinguished 29 year career in the fire service, will retire on March 31, 2010.   Todd became the Amherst chief in October 2007 after serving with the Merrimack Fire Department for nearly 27 years.

Chief Todd made many significant improvements to the Amherst Fire Department during his service to the town.  He was instrumental in enhancing the relationships with our mutual aid partners.  He formed a recruitment committee to enlist more on-call firefighters, and the department was very successful in its recruitment efforts.  With his background in the wild land fire arena, the chief saw the need to have a vehicle that would be well suited for off-road use.  He, along with many firefighters, donated numerous hours to restore a used all-wheel drive tanker into a forest fire fighting vehicle that will serve the community for many years.  In his additional role as the Emergency Management Director, he worked in conjunction with neighboring communities to create a regional Community Emergency Response Team; a group of volunteers who serve crucial roles in the town during emergencies.  Chief Todd was also instrumental in writing a grant to acquire new touch-pad radio consoles for Amherst Public Safety Communications Center.  As part of the town’s emergency operations team, he has been a tireless worker during the natural disasters that have struck the town in the last two years.

Chairman of the Board of Selectmen George Infanti said, “Losing a dedicated professional like Rick is a true loss to the Town.  It has been a real education observing him under pressure at fire scenes. On two separate occasions I watched as he calmly managed the scene and gained a new respect for his abilities not only as a seasoned and professional firefighter, but as a manager of men and the respect shown to him by his peers and other firefighters.” Selectman Bruce Bowler, the Board’s liaison to the fire department stated, “Chief Todd’s commitment to the Town of Amherst was 110% during his tenure. Rick will be missed and I want to personally thank him and wish him the best in his retirement”.

With his long standing commitment to the fire service in the state, it was no surprise to learn that in his retirement Chief Todd will continue to serve as a NH Fire Academy instructor, as well as a Special Deputy Forest Fire Warden with the state.  The Board wishes to congratulate Chief Todd for an outstanding career and express their appreciation for all that he has accomplished as the town’s fire chief.  The Board, though disappointed to lose such a valuable department head, is pleased that Chief Todd will be able to enjoy some of his hobbies, and most importantly spend quality time with family and friends.

The process to locate a new chief for the fire department will commence shortly.
